Debuting in a 5 ½-furlong turf sprint at Saratoga on Friday, Sportswriter came down the stretch in a gray flash to turn the second starter for New York freshman sire Maybry’s Boy into the stallion’s first winner.
Sportswriter, a Flying Zee homebred trained by Carlos Martin out of the winning Point Given mare Point Spread, raced along in the early stages, well back from the fray up front, then geared up going into the far turn, circled rivals and, despite some drifting and greenness in the stretch, got flying straight under apprentice Ryan Curatolo and hit the wire three-quarters of a length ahead of pacesetting favorite Little Dale. The final time for race over the firm turf course was 1:03.39. [VIDEO[2]]
Maybry’s Boy, who stood at Vinery New York[3] in Hudson this season for $2,500, is a 12-year-old Kentucky-bred grey/roan son of Broad Brush out of Aly’s Conquest, by Alydar. His second dam Am Capable (Icecapade) is a multiple graded stakes winner of $410,733 who produced 10 winners from 10 foals to start.
Breaking his maiden at two going seven furlongs at Aqueduct, the following year Maybry’s Boy won the Grade 3 Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream Park. After scoring at least one victory in each of six consecutive campaigns, and having had his picture taken at Aqueduct, Gulfstream Park, Delaware Park, and Saratoga Race Course, Maybry’s Boy retired to stud at age eight with a record of 8-4-6 from 43 starts and $322,700 in purse earnings. All but the maiden win came at the distance of six furlongs, at which he broke through into triple-digit Beyer territory.
Maybry’s Boy has five two-year-olds in his first crop.
