November New York-bred demand holds up

Strong demand and realistic expectations helped spark strong sales of New York-breds at two of the world’s top mixed sales that wrapped up this month in Kentucky.

Riding the wave of momentum that started with a small and select sample at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale, New York-breds continued to sell well at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Keeneland reported sales on 98 of the 104 New York-breds offered at its November sale for a total of $5,720,700, an average price of $58,374 and median of $25,000.

The sale of New York-bred weanlings played a significant role in those returns, as all 32 that went through the ring were sold for a total of $2,255,700, an average price of $70,491 and median of $47,500.

In addition to those lofty returns, other highlights of the November sales season included:

“The final numbers at the Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland November Sales reflect the value and strength of the New York-bred program,” said Najja Thompson, Executive Director of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. “Coming off a year in which the entire industry was impacted, these results are a credit to our state’s breeders in addition to consignors and buyers who continue to capitalize on the lucrative opportunities to owning a New York-bred with the goal of investing to compete on the best circuit in the nation and beyond.”

Simply Ravishing, the Grade 1-winning 3-year-old daughter of former Sequel New York resident Laoban, sold as Hip 233[3] at Fasig-Tipton and led the way in November. She was one of 26 broodmares, broodmare prospects or racing prospects that sold for $1 million or more during the Fasig-Tipton sale. Consigned by Gainesway, agent, Simply Ravishing is out of the More Than Ready mare Four Wishes.

Bred by Meg Levy and foaled at Stonegate Stables in Fort Edward, Simply Ravishing was a $50,000 purchase by trainer Kenny McPeek for Harold Lerner at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale. She went on to win more than eight times that amount, starting with back-to-back victories in a turf maiden and the off-the-turf P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga in her first two starts at 2. Simply Ravishing added the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland in her next start, before a fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

March X Press, winner of a New York-bred maiden and the open-company Bolton Landing Stakes over a 14-day stretch in August 2017, commanded the highest price for a New York-bred at the Keeneland sale. Offered as Hip 540[4] and in foal to Quality Road, the 6-year-old daughter of Shanghai Bobby sold for $560,000 to Parks Investment Group. Lane’s End consigned March X Press, who did not produce a foal in 2021 and is the dam of a yearling colt by Tapit.

Bred by Pine Ridge Stables and foaled at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, March X Press is out of the stakes-placed Indian Charlie mare Indian Rush and is a half-sister to stakes winner Harlan’s Honor.

The Keeneland sale’s most expensive weanling, a filly by Munnings sold as Hip 263[6], went for $300,000 to Brookstone Farm during the second session. Bred by Dr. Jerry Bilinski, foaled at his Waldorf Farm in North Chatham and consigned by Stuart Morris, agent for Waldorf Farm, the filly is out of the Tiznow mare Storm Crossing.

Waldorf Farm purchased Storm Crossing, carrying in the Munnings filly in utero, for $200,000 at last year’s Keeneland November sale. She’s the dam of five other Kentucky-bred foals, including a colt that sold for $125,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale, the 2-year-old Into Mischief colt that brought $750,000 at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale and the multiple stakes-placed $268,499-earning 4-year-old Constitution filly Kansas Kis.

Scott and Evan Dilworth purchased the co-most expensive New York-bred weanling at the two sales, going to $185,000 for a colt by Liam’s Map that sold as Hip 1774[7]. Bred by Pepin Breeders, foaled at Stone Bridge Farm in Gansevoort, consigned by Indian Creek, the colt is the first foal out of the winning Malibu Moon mare Malibu Rainbow.

A winner in maiden special weight company in 2019 at Gulfstream Park, Malibu Rainbow was purchased in foal to Liam’s Map by Beech-Grove Farm for $85,000 at last year’s Keeneland November sale. She sold immediately after her 2021 Liam’s Map colt, again in foal to that sire, to Kaizen Sales, agent, for $170,000.

The $185,000 price matched that paid by D K W Racing for Hip 806[8], a colt from the first crop of Omaha Beach that sold during Keeneland’s third session. Bred by and foaled at Old Tavern Farm in Saratoga Springs and consigned by Summerfield, agent for Old Tavern Farm, the colt is out of the winning Empire Maker mare Comme Chez Soi.

A $325,000 yearling out of the Grade 1-winning Storm and a Half mare Downthedustyroad, Comme Chez Soi was purchased by Old Tavern’s Walt Borisenok in foal to Lemon Drop Kid for $210,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November sale. The subsequent foal, the Kentucky-bred gelding Tom Management, was a $100,000 yearling and two-time winner for GMB Racing and trainer Al Stall Jr. Comme Chez Soi is also the dam of the New York-bred 4-year-old Malibu Moon filly Malibu Too and an unnamed 2-year-old New York-bred filly by Malibu Moon.

Fenway, a 3-year-old winning son of Into Mischief, landed the most expensive price for a New York-bred during the horses in training segment that wrapped up the final session. Sold as Hip 3744[9] by ELiTE, agent, Fenway was purchased by GMP Stables LLC for $100,000. Bred by and foaled at Sequel Stallions New York LLC in Hudson, Fenway is 1-1-1 in seven starts with $68,810 in earnings. He’s one of two winners out of the Songandaprayer mare Keysong.

Classy Edition enjoys another overland journey in Key Cents

[1]

Classy Edition improves to 3-for-3 with another daylight victory in Sunday’s Key Cents Stakes at Aqueduct. Susie Raisher/NYRA Photo.

By Tom Law

Classy Edition walked out of the sales ring at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale of 2-year-olds in training in Timonium, Md., as the most expensive New York-bred juvenile filly sold to that point in the year.

The daughter of Classic Empire stayed in that position on her $550,000 hammer price, finishing the 2-year-old sales season the most expensive New York-bred filly and second overall behind the Connect colt now named Relate who brought $685,000 at the OBS April sale. Classy Edition finds herself near the top again here in the waning weeks of 2021, for racing, and after she ran her record to 3-for-3 with a victory in Sunday’s $100,000 Key Cents Stakes at Aqueduct.

Under Irad Ortiz Jr., Classy Edition duplicated her overland victory in the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes in late September at Belmont Park with another wide-trip victory in the Key Cents.

Shortening up to 6 furlongs after winning the 7-furlong Gimma, Classy Edition defeated 50-1 longshot Captainsdaughter by 3 1/2 lengths with Shesastonecoldfox Stakes winner Shesawildjoker third in the field of eight.

“It went pretty smoothly,” said Todd Pletcher, who trains Classy Edition for Robert and Lawana Low. “It looked like a race on paper that had plenty of pace. The main thing is we just wanted to keep her clean and out of trouble and Irad was able to do that. We had to sacrifice a little bit of ground, but she was able to get into a good, comfortable rhythm.”

Classy Edition, the 4-5 favorite and one of three stakes winners in the field, raced fifth early while recent maiden winner Silver Fist took the field through the opening quarter-mile in :22.48. Makin My Move, once a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint who was returning to the main track after a fourth in the Grade 3 Matron on grass, and Wesley Ward’s Kentucky shipper Miss Alacrity chased side-by-side up the backstretch.

Silver Fist continued to lead around the far turn over the same tandem of pursuers, while Ortiz was content to let Classy Edition linger 2 1/4 lengths back and in sixth while racing on the outside.

[2]

Classy Edition, the second most expensive New York-bred 2-year-old sold at auction in 2021, did everything right in Sunday’s Key Cents Stakes for jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Joe Labozzetta/NYRA Photo.

“She broke a step slow but she put me in the race quick,” Ortiz said. “After that I just waited in the turn.”

Classy Edition raced at least five paths off the inside turning for home while Silver Fist, Making My Move and Miss Alacrity started to tire. Shesawildjoker also put in a belated run into the stretch but couldn’t match Classy Editions late kick inside the final furlong.

“She’s the type of filly that needs a little time to get going,” Ortiz said. “She probably wants to go a little farther, but she kept coming and she got there on time. At the quarter-pole, she went by and she just kept going. She’s a nice filly.”

Captainsdaughter closed from last, well out and almost in the middle of the track, to finish a neck ahead of Shesawildjoker for the place spot. Silver Fist, Cupid’s Heart, Tosconova Beauty, Makin My Move and Miss Alacrity completed the field.

Classy Edition, who won in 1:12.19, collected $55,000 to boost her earnings to $184,250.

Bloodstock agent Jacob West purchased Classy Edition, offered as Hip 72[3], on behalf of the Lows at the Midlantic May sale. She breezed a furlong in :10.1 during presale workouts and wound up the second most expensive filly and fourth highest-priced horse overall.

Classy Edition went to Saratoga with Todd Pletcher’s string shortly after the sale and posted her first workout there June 20. After eight more breezes on Saratoga’s main track, Classy Edition won her debut by 6 3/4 lengths going 5 1/2 furlongs the second-to-last day of the meet, Sept. 5. Pletcher brought her back 19 days later and she became a stakes winner in the Joseph A. Gimma, by 8 lengths over a muddy track at Belmont Park.

Pletcher targeted the Maid of the Mist Stakes on Empire Showcase Day from there, but the filly spiked a temperature before the race and wasn’t entered.

“It set us behind schedule a little bit, Pletcher said of missing the Maid of the Mist. “This seemed like a logical place to bring her back.”

Pletcher said Classy Edition, now with wins at 5 1/2, 6 and 7 furlongs, would likely stretch out down the road.

“We’ll see what other options we have now and what we’ll do with her for the winter,” he said. “We’re looking forward to stretching her out because I think she ultimately wants two turns.”

Bred by Chester and Mary Broman and foaled at their Chestertown Farm in Chestertown, Classy Edition was sold at the Timonium sale by Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock. Out of the Broman-bred two-time winning Bernardini mare Newbie, Classy Edition is a half-sister to multiple New York-bred stakes winner Newly Minted and the stakes-placed New Girl In Town. Newbie is also the dam of a New York-bred yearling colt by American Pharoah.

The Bromans bought Newbie’s dam Changeisgonnacome, carrying Newbie, for $320,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Bred in Virginia by Audley Farm, that mare won Saratoga’s P.G. Johnston Stakes in 2006 and placed in a Grade 2 the following year. All five foals of her foals to race were winners.

The Bromans came into the week in a familiar spot – atop the leaderboard of breeders by New York-bred earnings. Horses bred by the couple earned more than $2.6 million, more than $800,000 more than the next closest breeders McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC.

Another sweet win for Senbei in Notebook

[1]

Senbei improves to 4-for-5 in the Notebook Stakes at Aqueduct. Dom Napolitano/NYRA Photo.

By Tom Law

Christophe Clement continued his magical November and Senbei improved to 4-for-5 in his young career in Sunday’s $97,000 Notebook Stakes at Aqueduct.

Senbei, a 2-year-old son of Candy Ride who races for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Darlene Bilinski, rolled to his second straight stakes victory and third overall in his 8 1/4-length score in the 6-furlong Notebook. He also gave Clement his fourth stakes victory of the month, including the Nov. 5 double of Pizza Bianca in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar and Classic Lady’s win in the Ticonderoga Stakes at Aqueduct.

Senbei came into the Notebook the only stakes winner in the original field of six and stayed that way, shrugging off mild pressure early on the way to victory in 1:11.49 under Manny Franco.

“I was confident because the jockey looked so comfortable on him,” said Clement, the winner of nine races overall so far in November. “When (Kendrick) Carmouche (aboard Bustin Pietre) came to him at the three-eighths, I was a little anxious, but at soon as he shook him up at the quarter-pole, I thought he looked comfortable and he won going away. He’s a nice horse.”

Bred by Dr. Jerry Bilinski and foaled at his Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, Senbei added the Notebook to his victory last time out in the New York Breeders’ Futurity at Finger Lakes and the Funny Cide Stakes in late August at Saratoga Race Course. His lone defeat was a second to Shipsational in the 7-furlong Bertram F. Bongard Stakes in late September at Belmont Park.

“He’ll have a break now,” Clement said. “We’ve been squeezing him a little bit. He’s had five starts. He’s a good horse and a fast horse. It will be interesting to see if he can come back next year and stretch his speed a little bit.”

Senbei went to the post 1-5 against his four opponents – Kenner was a late scratch at the gate before running loose and causing a 10-minute delay – and took control from the start. He and Franco led debut maiden winner Bustin Pietre by a length through the opening quarter-mile in :23.03 with Cool Laoban and Daufuski Island not far back.

[2]

Manny Franco loved what he felt from Senbei early and late in Sunday’s Notebook Stakes at Aqueduct. Janet Garaguso/NYRA Photo.

Franco, aboard for each of Senbei’s first four starts, liked what he felt early.

“As soon as I made the lead, I didn’t feel too much pressure,” he said. “I was able to slow down the first part and I knew after that I was going to be tough.”

Bustin Pietre cut into the lead around the far turn and got within a half-length after a half in :46.59, but Senbei shrugged off that challenge in the stretch. He opened up at the eighth pole, past 5 furlongs in :58.81 and the margin grew inside the final sixteenth. Bustin Pietre, a homebred for Roddy Valente also foaled at Waldorf Farm, held second by a half-length from 5-1 second choice Daufuskie Island with Bali’s Shade fourth and Cool Laoban fifth.

“He’s a very nice sprinter,” Franco said. “I wanted to break good and then he did the rest. My plan was to go to the lead and slow down the pace if I could. That’s how he likes to run.”

Named by Clement’s future daughter-in-law and NYRA racing analyst Acacia Courtney after the sometimes savory and sometimes sweet Japanese cracker by the same name, Senbei is one of five winners out of the winning Western Cat mare Sweet Aloha. Clement credited his son and assistant Miguel with picking Senbei out of the 2020 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale – where he sold as a weanling for $280,000 out of Stuart Morris’ consignment.

Sweet Aloha is also the dam of New York-bred stakes winners Filibustin and Indy’s Lady, along with the stakes-placed winner Man O Manassas. She also produced Screen Door, a New York-bred yearling colt who sold for $60,000 at the recent Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October sale; and the unraced 3-year-old New York-bred Bustin Stones filly Aloha From Haiku, who sold in foal to Higher Power for $10,000 Friday at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Senbei earned $55,000 for his latest victory and boosted his bankroll to $364,857, the second most of any New York-bred 2-year-old in 2021. Dakota Gold, a son of Freud also campaigned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, leads that group with $385,000.

Clement also came into the week as the leading trainer of New York-breds in 2021 with purses of more than $2.6 million.

New York-breds play key role at Keeneland November sale

[1]

By Tom Law

The Keeneland November breeding stock sale hit the halfway mark Sunday, already surpassing last year’s mark for total receipts with New York-breds playing a role through a steady stream of six-figure horses.

Three six-figure horses with New York ties went through the ring Sunday, including a weanling colt by Liam’s Map who commanded a final bid of $185,000 from Scott and Evan Dilworth. Bred by Pepin Breeders, foaled at Stone Bridge Farm in Gansevoort, consigned by Indian Creek and offered as Hip 1774[2], the colt is the first foal out of the winning Malibu Moon mare Malibu Rainbow.

The $185,000 price matched that paid by D K W Racing for Hip 806[3], a colt from the first crop of Omaha Beach that sold during the third session Friday.

Keeneland reported gross sales of $166,206,000 from 1,120 horses sold through Sunday’s session, a total that surpassed last year’s final tally of $151,017,300 for 10 sessions. The November sale’s average price so far is $148,398, up 13.2 percent from a year ago to this point, while median is up 26.7 percent to $95,000.

Keeneland also reported a low buy-back rate of 15.3 percent, which falls in line with an even better number for New York-breds through the ring. Thirty of the 32 New York-breds offered during the third, fourth and fifth sessions have sold, a 94 percent clearance rate.

[4]

Harlan’s Honor, winner of the 2013 Colleen Stakes at Monmouth and a half sister to March X Press, sold for $200,000 at Keeneland November. Photo courtesy of Gainesway.

The most expensive New York-bred during that run was Harlan’s Honor, a 9-year-old stakes-winning daughter of Harlan’s Holiday and half-sister to stakes winner March X Press. Consigned by Gainesway, agent, and offered as Hip 891[5] in foal to McKinzie, Harlan’s Honor was purchased by Jackpot for $200,000.

Bred by Marty Zaretsky, foaled at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham and a $165,000 purchase at the 2014 OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training, Harlan’s Honor went 2-1-3 in 10 starts with $110,350 in earnings. She won her debut at Monmouth Park about two months after selling as a 2-year-old then the Colleen Stakes there in early August.

Harlan’s Honor, who also placed in two stakes as a 3-year-old, sold in foal to Liam’s Map for $300,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. The subsequent foal, the filly Song River, is multiple stakes placed and the winner of a Saratoga allowance Sept. 5 and a Churchill Downs allowance-optional Saturday. March X Press, winner of a New York-bred maiden and the open-company Bolton Landing Stakes over a 14-day stretch in August 2017, made her fourth pass through the Keeneland sales ring since 2016 Thursday and brought the highest bid of any of the trips.

Offered as Hip 540[2] and in foal to Quality Road, the 6-year-old daughter of Shanghai Bobby sold for $560,000 to Parks Investment Group.

She sold to Golconda Stables for $90,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale.

March X Press won two of nine starts for Golconda and placed in two other stakes with a pair of four-place finishes in graded stakes for trainer Todd Pletcher. She sold for $275,000 to Jackpot Farm at the 2018 Keeneland November sale then brought $330,000 from Newgate Farm while in foal to Tapit at the 2019 Keeneland November sale. The subsequent Kentucky-bred Tapit colt sold for $700,000 at the recent Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale.

March X Press wound up one of five six-figure New York-breds that sold during Thursday’s session that opened Book 2.

Simply Ravishing, last year’s champion New York-bred 2-year-old filly, helped contribute to the stellar returns at Tuesday’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale on a seven-figure bid late in the proceedings at the Newtown Paddocks in Lexington.

The Grade 1-winning 3-year-old daughter of former Sequel New York resident Laoban, selling as Hip 233[2], sold for $1.7 million to Katsumi Yoshida to be among the 26 broodmares, broodmare prospects or racing prospects that sold for $1 million or more during the sale.

Simply Ravishing burst on the national scene in her third start, taking the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland to punch her ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies there a month later.

Simply Ravishing’s story gained notoriety in the late summer and fall, after word passed through the industry how her dam, Four Wishes, was purchased by Levy on her birthday for $500 after being abandoned at a boarding facility. She finished fourth in the Juvenile Fillies and then fourth again in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs to end her 2-year-old season.

Yoshida purchased two other high-priced mares during Tuesday’s sale, going to $2.9 million for Princess Noor, $1.6 million for Duopoly, $1.05 million for Mongolian Changa and $775,000 to Heavenhasmynikki.

Espresso Shot, a three-time finalist for New York-bred championship honors, sold for the next highest price for a New York-bred at $300,000. Spendthrift Farm LLC purchased the 5-year-old mare by Sequel’s active stallion Mission Impazible. Consigned by Ballysax Bloodstock, agent for Final Furlong Racing, Espresso Shot was sold as Hip 163[5] as a racing or broodmare prospect.

Bred by Twin Creeks Farm, Espresso Shot was a $69,000 purchase by Final Furlong Racing at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale. NY Final Furlong campaigned her with partners Maspeth Stables and Parkland Thoroughbreds and Espresso Shot compiled a record of 5-3-4 from 24 starts with $516,625 in earnings.

Trained by Jorge Abreu, Espresso Shot was a stakes winner at 2, 3, 4 and 5. She earned finalist honors in the New York-bred 2-year-old filly division after winning the East View Stakes at Aqueduct. She returned as a finalist at 3, a season that saw her win the Busher Stakes at Aqueduct and finish second in the New York Oaks at Finger Lakes.

Espresso Shot was also a finalist for champion female sprinter as a 4-year-old in 2020, after winning the Staten Island division of the New York Stallion Series. She won or placed in four of seven starts in 2021, including a victory in the Biogio’s Rose in March at Aqueduct and a third in the Iroquois Stakes on Empire Showcase Day at Belmont Park in late October.

Espresso Shot was one of five other six-figure New York-bred purchases Tuesday, along with a pair of weanling fillies that sold on back-to-back trips through the ring for $220,000.

Hip 46[7], a filly from the first crop of multiple Grade 1 winner Omaha Beach and half-sister to Espresso Shot, sold first to Sewanne Investments.

Bred by Final Furlong Racing and Maspeth Stable, foaled at Schuylerville Thoroughbred Farm in Fort Edward and consigned by Ballysax Bloodstock, agent, the filly is out of the winning Medaglia d’Oro mare Glory Gold. In addition to Espresso Shot, Glory Gold is the dam of recent Maid of the Mist Stakes winner Venti Valentine and New York-bred winners Goldtown and Hokulea.

Double Up: Somelikeithotbrown defends Mohawk title

[1]

Somelikeithotbrown, excluded from Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Mile, takes second straight Mohawk Stakes at Belmont Park. Chelsea Durand/NYRA Photo.

By Melissa Bauer-Herzog

Almost exactly three years removed from a third in the 2018 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, the ultra-consistent New York-bred Somelikeithotbrown visited the winner’s circle for an eighth time in Saturday’s $200,000 Mohawk Stakes at Belmont Park.

Skychai Racing’s and David Koenig’s 5-year-old son of Big Brown was first out of the gate and first to the front in the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes and never looked back. He had a few lengths on the field throughout most of the running and set fractions of :24.23 and :49.15 for the first half as Klickitat followed in second.

Somelikeithotbrown allowed the field creep a little closer around the turn before Jorge Vargas Jr. let him extend as they raced toward the stretch. Somelikeithotbrown repelled a challenge by City Man as they straightened and had more than enough to fend off that threat.

Sanctuary City was the next to make a move at the 1-2 favorite but could only get within a half-length at the line as Somelikeithotbrown stopped the clock in 1:42.39.

The Mohawk capped an up and down week for the Hot Pink Stables and Sand Dollar Stables-bred 5-year-old, who had been pre-entered into Saturday’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar but was not selected into the field. After that decision trainer Mike Maker and Somelikeithotbrown’s connections decided to go for a second straight Mohawk victory and it proved to be a winning move.

“He was [originally] pointing to the Breeders’ Cup so you had to feel confident,” said Vargas. “He was traveling easily throughout. When they got to me, I asked a little bit and he jumped on them right away. When it was time to run, he fought to the end. He’s a nice horse.

“Nice horses make multiple moves. They know what they’re capable of, and that’s what he does. He still had something left; I could barely pull him up he was feeling so good.”

The multiple Grade 1-placed Somelikeithotbrown added to his seven-figure bankroll Saturday, raising it to $1,189,338 in his 17th top-three finish in 23 starts.

Foaled at Sequel Stallions New York, Somelikeithotbrown is one of two New York-bred stakes winners for the Tapit mare Marilyn Monroan. She’s also the dam of Jolting Joe, who has finished in the top three in six of his eight starts this year.

Three of Marilyn Monroan’s four foals are active on the track in 2021, with her 3-year-old Culture Icon running four times this year.

Marilyn Monroan also has a Kentucky-bred unnamed 2-year-old by Palace Malice, a yearling filly by Hard Spun and she visited Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Mendelssohn this year.
