Six-figure sales continue at OBS April

A New York-bred colt by champion and classic winner Classic Empire from the immediate family of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah sold for $335,000 to highlight the third session of the OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training Thursday in Ocala.

Ed and Susie Orr landed the day’s top-priced New York-bred, Hip 784[2], from the Harris Training Center LLC consignment. Bred by Chester and Mary Broman and foaled at their Chestertown Farm in Chestertown, the colt is out of the Grade 3-winning Stormin Fever mare Misty Rosette. A full sister to Grade 2 winner Storm Wolf, Misty Rosette is also a half sister to Littleprincessemma, the dam of 2015 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male American Pharoah.

Misty Rosette, winner off the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream Park and third in the Grade 1 Darley Test Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in 2006, was purchased in foal to Tiznow by the Bromans for $170,000 at the 2013 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. She’s produced subsequent New York-bred winners Cold Gone Hot, Under Suspicion and Flying Finish among her six winners.

The Classic Empire colt was one of six New York-breds that sold for $100,000 or more during Thursday’s session, bringing the overall total to 16 with one session remaining. OBS reported sales on 13 of the 17 New York-breds offered Thursday for $1,365,000, an average price of $105,000. Overall, 33 New York-breds have sold for $4,103,000, an average of $124,333.

Three Diamonds Farm went to $215,000 to purchase Hip 750[4], a colt by multiple leading New York sire Freud who breezed in :10, during Thursday’s session.

Consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC, agent, the colt is out of the winning and stakes-producing Good and Tough mare Mighty Good. Bred by Carol E. Pepper and Davie Bloodstock LLC and foaled at Pepper Farm in Albion, the colt sold to Grassroots Training & Sales for $50,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale.

Mighty Good is the dam of six winners led by Miss Narcissist, a stakes-winning New York-bred daughter of Freud who earned $241,970 over two seasons. She’s also the dam of three other winning New York-bred full siblings to Miss Narcissist, led by the stakes-placed Fenwick Hall.

Four-time leading New York-sire Freud, a 24-year-old son of Storm Cat and full brother to Giant’s Causeway, stands for $5,000 at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson.

Hip 730[5], a son of former leading New York freshman sire Laoban, sold for $160,000 to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners during Thursday’s session. Consigned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, agent, the colt out of the winning Lion Heart mare May Who breezed in :10.1.

Bred by Powers’ Stables LLC and foaled at Old Saratoga Equine Services in Schuylerville, the colt is the fifth foal out of May Who and a full brother to the winning 4-year-old New York-bred gelding Rogue Leader.

The sale concludes with the final session at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
