Russiarussiarussia, a winning 3-year-old New York-bred daughter of Bernardini, sold for $35,000 Thursday at the Keeneland horses of racing age sale in Lexington.
Danny Caldwell, a frequent leading owner in the Southwest region including at Remington Park, Oaklawn Park and Prairie Meadows , purchased Russiarussiarussia from ELiTE, agent. Offered as Hip 5188[2], Russiarussiarussia was bred by Vineyard Racing LLC and Godolphin and is out of the winning Medaglia d’Oro mare Katama. She was foaled at Hickory Hill Farm Thoroughbreds in Fort Edward.
A $70,000 purchase at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Showcase and a $310,000 buy at the 2021 OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training, Russiarussiarussia went 1-1-2 in six starts for owner Doubledown Stables Inc. and trainer Chad Brown. She won a 1 1/16-mile turf maiden June 4 at Belmont Park before a third in an allowance at the same distance on the turf at Saratoga in mid-July.
Russiarussiarussia is one of three winners out of Katama, along with Katama Bay and Bump. She is also the dam of the 2-year-old New York-bred colt Makar, who has placed twice in two starts on the NYRA circuit including Thursday at Aqueduct. Katama is the dam of a yearling New York-bred colt by Palace Malice bred by Vineyard Racing LLC.
Russiarussiarussia was one of the five New York-breds sold at the sale from eight through the ring for a total of $82,000 and an average price of $16,400.
